Pound stretching further abroad

British holidaymakers abroad will see their spending money stretch much further than last year as a result of the sharp rise of sterling against 13 of the 20 leading currencies over the past 12 months, according to new research.

Analysis by the Post Office showed that the pound had gained by up to a third against some popular currencies. Against the Egyptian pound and UAE dirham, sterling will buy 15% more than in January 2009.

The pound has also strengthened against the dollar by around 15% in the past year, although it fell back slightly this week following the Government’s announcement that the economy is growing at a slower rate than expected.

The Post Office said the improvement in sterling’s value has been mirrored by a rise in currency sales. Read more…

Air New Zealand to offer beds in economy class

Air New Zealand is to offer passengers beds in economy class on some flights later this year and has designed what it calls a Skycouch.

The beds, which are formed by footrests and consist of blanket and pillows, will be available on the airline’s new fleet of Boeing 777-300. They will be big enough for a couple or a couple with a small child and will take the space of three normal economy class seats and cost two seats at standard prices and a third at half price.

The airline says the couches and a general makeover of the cabins in the new planes is aimed at revitalising long haul travel. Read more…
